At least one person was feared dead, a luxury bus operated by the Lagos State Government Bus Service (LAGBUS) and several vehicles torched when officials of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps(NSCDC) clashed with ‘areaboys’ in Majidun, Ikorodu for arresting 60 persons suspected to be siphoning Premium Motor Spirits(PMS) otherwise called fuel from a burst pipeline belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation(NNPC).
Eye witness said one Mr. Sule Osha was shot dead in the ensuing melee when NSCDC men returned fire after they were attacked by the villagers with guns and machetes. While parading the 60 men, Commandant of the NSCDC, Lagos State, Mr. Shem Obafaiye said several dangerous weapons including guns, cutlasses among others were recovered from the vandals.
“My officers went on operation Sunday night after receiving intelligence reports on the operation of the vandals in Majidun and they were able to return with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) stored in various jerry cans. But another report came during the day that those people were back operating again so my people have to reinforce and go back to the village and on getting there the whole villager came out in full force attacking my men.” Obafaiye explained that about seven of the officers who went for the operation were badly injured by the villagers and are now receiving treatment in the hospital. He said intelligence report showed that the Baale of the community was in the know, adding that plans are being made to arrest all those involved in the operation even as those arrested claimed they knew nothing about the incident.
A suspect Mr. Ganny Adeniji said he was in the community this morning to purchase sand before he was arrested by the officer.Adeniji who handed over his complementary cards and identification to prove his innocent said he has no idea that the officers were raiding the community. “I trade on sand and this is not my first time of coming to the village to buy sand, I was carrying out this transaction when the officers came arrested all the men there and ask the women to leave the area.“Am pleading with the authority to let me go home am not one of the vandals and I don’t even have any knowledge that something like that was going on there before, what I came there for was to buy sand which is what I do for a leaving and I have been doing this for many years.Also, Chukwu Samson a tipper driver said he was arrested at the bus stop while trying to flee from the village when he learnt that community members and the officers were fighting.
“I was at the park trying to repair my vehicle when the noise came and that they civil defence men and the villagers were fighting. So I decided to cross the road to take another bus into Ikorodu town but I fell and got my leg injured.”
