Chairman of sand dredgers in Amuwo-Odofin area of Lagos, Mr. Pius Oladele was yesterday killed when a substance suspected to be an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded under the Amuwo-Odofin/Festac link bridge, Lagos.
The explosive detonated at about 11:30 AM, killing Oladele and injuring a policeman who came to visit the deceased under the bridge (popularly called Miracle Beach). An eye witnessed told reporters that residents ran in different direction, thinking that it was the dreaded Boko Haram sect that had unleashed mayhem on Lagos State.Addressing residents of the area, Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Alhaji Umar Manko, urged residents of Lagos not to panic, describing what has happened as a minor explosion, adding that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) is already investigating the matter.
Mr. Adeola Peters, a sand miner and close associate of the deceased, told reporters that the (deceased) resumed for work yesterday morning. We gathered that the affected individual received a phone call thirty minutes before the outset, drove out and returned in company of a policeman. Upon settling down at his usual spot, the deceased, we gathered called one of his loyalists simply identified as Dogo, to buy ‘Alomo Bitters’, a local gin which he shared with his police friend. We learnt that the policeman only moved a few steps when the explosion rippled through the vicinity, killing Oladele on the spot and injured the policeman.
