NOT LESS than 4.3 billion Pounds was invested in the creation of content in the UK alone in 2007. Chairman Norwegian Copyright Development Association(NCDA), Professor Helge Ronning, made the revelation in his paper, Cultural Industries and Economies of Creation during the COSON Week in Lagos.

Quoting from a report published by Price Waterhouse Coopers in 2011, the professor said that at least 850 Pounds was invested in literature while 720 Pounds was invested in artistic works, and that at least 770,000 people were involved in the creation of original content.

He said that the department of Culture, Media and Support estimates that the creative industries generated 5.6 percent of total Gross Value Added (GVA) in the UK in 2008 and provided 2.3 million jobs.

“Estimates based on the World Intellectual Property Organisation (IPO) suggest that the UK has the largest core and dependent copyright sector in Europe at 8.4percent of GDP”, he said adding that research however shows that the size of copyright dependent sectors have grown steadily in the last decade”, Ronning Said.

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola yesterday formally handed over the Lekki-Ikoyi suspended link bridge built with the best of aesthetics to take off traffic from Victoria Island. Commuters who hope to use the bridge will however have to pay a toll each way with salon cars paying N250.00, motorcycles with 200cc capacity and above N100.00, mini-vans, SUVs and light pick-up trucks N300.00 while non-commercial buses with a maximum seating capacity of 26 persons will pay N400.00 each way.

While handing over the project, the governor said that the primary objective  for embarking on the project was to provide a transport infrastructure and strategic traffic management solution aimed at easing traffic congestion in the area.

“This is why similar bridge works are being undertaken in Agiliti in the Mile 12 area, to connect communities that have been separated by water for forever. This is why a similar project is being executed in Ajao-Ejigbo area with the construction of a link bridge and road to connect another area separated by the Ejigbo canal from time immemorial.

“It is the same reason for a similar project , a four lane bridge in Isheri-Ijegun –Isolo area, to provide crossing over water, connect separated communities; and reduce journey times and the associated economic and social costs”, the Governor explained.

The Governor stated that the present administration is working ceaselessly to start the commencement of the 4th Mainland Bridge, adding that the state has made a lot of progress on it adding that the bridge will take off from Lekki across the Lagoon  to Ikorodu.

“All of these will bring a lot of relief during the period of the building of the 4th Mainland Bridge as it will provide choice after its completion. All of these fit very squarely within our inter-modal transport plan of connectivity of rail, ferries and vehicles. Others cities such as London and Cairo have 33 bridges on the River Thames and five bridges on the River Nile respectively”, he added.

“We expect therefore that from today the people of Lekki who have no business in Victoria Island will not need to go on to Ozumba Mbadiwe in order to cross to the Mainland. In the event that they do, it will not be because they have no alternatives, it will be because they made a choice”, he stressed.

He gave a commitment that in the future, the government intends to complete the road from the third Roundabout through Admiralty Way to provide a choice and access to commuters from Ajah who are heading to the Mainland.

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Kayode Fayemi

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Kayode Fayemi

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Kayode Fayemi has said that what took place during the Nigeria’s Governors Forum (NGF) election was misrepresented by the media.

Fayemi who was reacting to the way the media reported the events said he was particularly worried about deliberate distortion of facts in a bid to justify the setting up of a parallel group, following the defeat of Governor Jonah Jang in the keenly contested chairmanship election.

“While we are not interested in joining issues with the Pro-Jang group in their smear campaign in the media, we feel compelled to correct some of the negative impressions being created in the minds of unsuspecting members of the public through a pot pourri of fabricated stories and outright lies. It is on record that all the 35 governors present voted and there is an electronic evidence of this, and Delta State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan served as the Returning Officer in the Friday election that produced Governor Amaechi as chairman of NGF”, he said adding that the endorsement of Governor Jang by the PDP Governors forum was itself not an election.

“ Whereas the pro-Jang group had reportedly premised their position on earlier endorsement of Governor Jang’s candidature by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Governors Forum and the Northern Governors Forum, it suffices to state without any fear of contradiction that endorsement of a candidate does not translate to actual votes in any election. And even if they want to claim it as the result of the election, how come it was originally dated April and  contained the names of Governor Ibrahim Geidam of Yobe State and Governor Hassan Dankwambo of Gombe State who were absent ?”, he queried.

Fayemi explained that a candidate can have countless endorsements ahead of an election, but that electoral victory is determined mainly by the number of votes he is able to garner at the election.

“Having won the election, Governor Amaechi had demonstrated statesmanship by making his acceptance speech, which dwelled on his readiness to work with his opponent, Governor Jang and the need for the governors to work with the President of the Country, Dr Goodluck Jonathan in moving the country forward. Contrary to the rather bizarre position being canvassed by the pro-Jang group, we do not see any reason for us to demonstrate that we won the election”, he said stressing that results of the election, as announced by the electoral officer is clear on the victory of Governor Amaechi.

“Rushing to Abuja to create the impression of being the so-called authentic Governors’ Forum is not only childish but petty. At an appropriate time, a meeting of the Forum will be convened. For now, we are busy concentrating on our developmental works in our individual states rather than indulging in smear campaigns and distortions”, the governor said.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola

Renowned constitutional lawyer, Professor Itse Sagay has called on the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola to take the stake higher by contesting for President in the 2015 general elections.

Sagay who spoke at the presentation of the book, Fashola, the historic reconstruction of Lagos authored by Emeka Odikpo, called on the governor to look beyond Lagos politics, adding that with the kind of transformation that Lagos State has witnessed under his administration and under his predecessor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed could be replicated at the Centre. With the level of commitment and modest achievements recorded by his administration in Lagos so far what is next for Governor Fashola is to offer himself to serve the people at the national level”, Sagay said.

The lawyer described the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) led government as one lacking interest of  Nigeria at heart, adding that it is unfortunate that those currently holding political power at the centre have only succeeded in bringing Nigeria down in the committee of nations.

“People at the Centre limit everything to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). They have no philosophy of government. They are just a group of people whose only intention is to accumulate power and accumulate resources and enjoy themselves rather than work in the interest of the entire country”.The constitutional lawyer however isolated Governor Chibuike Amaechi, whom he described as a breakaway type of PDP governor trying to make an impact in the life of the people and establish some legacies of good governance adding that what he is doing is not in the character of the PDP, this he said is responsible for his ordeal in the PDP.

In his comment, Professor Pat Utomi  condemned the Metro Line project, which he said would have helped to de-congest traffic in Lagos.“Though, Mudashiru Lawal is a good man, one of my saddest days in life was when he stopped the metro line project. Kuala Lumpur that started their metro line with Lagos at the same time then has since completed hers. I am happy that dream is being recreated now by the Fashola administration and many of us will live to see that dream fulfilled.
