Nollywood comedian, Mr. Babatunde Omidina, better known as Baba Suwe suffered a setback on Friday in his bid to pocket the sum of N25 million awarded him by Justice Yetunde Idowu of Lagos High Court over his incarceration for allegedly ingesting substance suspected to be drugs.
Omidina was arrested by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on October 11 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on his way to Paris and kept in NDLEA cell under observation for 21 days. Ruling on the case, Justice Rita Pemu of the Court of Appeal sitting at Igbosere, Lagos said that the trial Judge erred, describing the N25 million award as excessive, unrealistic and perverse.
“The appellant took note of the respondent’s rights, and that was why it applied for an extension of time to keep the respondent in custody which the Federal High Court presided over by retired Justice Okeke rightly granted. The detention of the respondent is therefore, not unreasonable,” the appellate court held.
