Thuraya Phone banned in Nigerian war zone

The military authority in Northern part of Nigeria today banned use of satellite phones, Thuraya in three Nigerian northern states where it is confronting the proscribed Islamic sect, Boko Haram. Spokesman for the military, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa said the ban was designed to stop the militants from using it to plan their operations.

He said investigation showed that the militants used the phone to plan their attacks on civilians including two schools in the area in the past few days. The ban is effective from June 19th, Sagir said, adding that by the ban, nobody is allowed to sell Thuraya phones and accessories, he said in a statement.

“Anyone seen with Thuraya phones, recharge cards and accessories will be arrested”, he said in the statement.
