Human Rights Lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana has said he did not and will not contest governorship election in Ekiti State so as not to divide votes that will accrue to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the state. Falana who spoke to journalists at in Lagos said the Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Kayode Fayemi is doing well, adding that all that he needs is encouragement.

“That is what our enemies want, they want me to contest so as to divide the votes of ACN”, he said adding that Fayemi was also part of the June 12 struggle, stressing that  even if the governor appears stubborn all that is needed is to talk some sense into him.

He called on Nigerians to be vigilant over coming local government elections in Lagos adding that residents of the state must resist imposition and ensure that their votes count. The Senior Advocate of Nigeria said he resisted an attempt to impose a candidate he feels knows nothing about governance in his area adding that he had to threaten to cause uproar before that candidate was withdrawn.

He commended the media for writing about the contributions of Nigerians to the June 12 struggle adding that it has not been kind to itself by refusing to highlight their contribution during the struggle to actualise June 12.

According to him, some newspapers, like The Guardian, The Punch, The News and Nigerian Observer were shutdown for refusing to stop inquiring into the annulment of June 12 presidential elections, while the likes of Tempo that came out after The News was shut resulted to gorilla journalism. He recalled that the media was so forceful that at a time, the military junta, led by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida thought the weekly magazine was being published in the United States Information Service (USIS) office in Lagos only to discover that they were wrong.
